After two successful years in Whistler, B.C. XTERRA Canada is pleased to announce that the Canadian National Championship event will be moving to the Canmore, Alberta in 2012. The XTERRA festival will remain on September long weekend, consistent with it's historic Canadian date on the Global XTERRA tour.
Developed for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park remains a world-class facility. In 2005 the Centre was significantly renovated to establish itself as one of the top mountain bike and trail running destinations in the world. With more than 65 km (37 miles) of maintained trail, race director Tony Smith has been able to design two separate race courses to suite all abilities. The Sport race offers a short 500 m swim, a mountain bike course set entirely on non-technical wide double track trail, and a super fun 5 km trail run. While the Championship course pushes the swim distance to 1500m, challenges the mountain bikers with some the best single track and technical features at the Nordic Centre then punishes the athletes with a gruelling 10 km trail run.
"Alberta has embraced XTERRA racing over the past 2 years and they deserve to have our National Championships in Canmore," adds XTERRA Canada President, Calvin Zaryski. "Local athletes and spectators will be able to see some of the best off road triathletes in the World race head to head for prize money. In addition to the off road triathlons and duathlon, the weekend will also offer the Canadian National XTERRA Trail Running Championship. We are really excited to host such a prestigious event that offers something for everyone."
In 2010 and 2011 the Canmore event was named the Alberta Off-Road Provincial Championships, attracting the largest number of participants of any XTERRA event on the Canadian race calendar. "After presenting the Championship event in Whistler for the last two years, I am thrilled to be able to bring the National Championships into my own back yard", XTERRA Canada Race Director Tony Smith. Smith is a Canmore resident, veteran triathlete and highly experienced local race director.
All participants will receive an XTERRA branded, technical merino wool shirt from Icebreaker (retail value $85) as well as an XTERRA Custom Buff ($20 value) along with other goodies from generous sponsors. Top age group finishers will receive special awards. Awards and post race buffet (included in race entry fee) will be provided at the Nordic Centre.
Canmore's Rocky Mountain Ski Lodge is offering all participants and family preferred rates. Mention SMITH EVENTS when making your reservations to qualify for room rate discounts.
